Oswestry Crowned Premier Division Winners
Oswestry Ladies 1 are celebrating winning the Shropshire Women's Doubles competition for the first time following a 3-1 home win over Cound.
The ladies went into the final game of the season needing just one point to seal the league title, believed to be Oswestry's first since forming in 1924. This was secured by Fiona Russel and Katie Land with a cool 6-1 6-4 victory over the Cound second pairing. Josie MacRae and Flo Malherbe lost out on a champions tie break in the first rubber but both pairs enjoyed straight set wins in the reverse rubbers to kick start the celebrations.
Josie MacRae, ladies first team captain, was full of praise for what has been a tremendous team effort and was delighted to finally add the league title to her list of honours: "It has been a tough season from working how to stay up with Kat Oakley's injury early in the season. New club member Katie Land from Brymbo Tennis Club joined the squad and Flo played a couple of extra games."
"With all I have done in my career, the Shropshire League title was always missing and winning the Premier league is an outstanding achievement by the team and I'm so proud of them. There was a lot of pressure in the final match but experience came through."
Congratulations to the whole squad of Josie Macrae, Kat Oakley, Eirian Jones, Fiona Russell, Speth Cumpston, Rebecca Hollywell, Katie Land and Florence Malherbe.
The team will collect their winners medals at an awards ceremony later in the year.
