Club Finals Day 2020
Oswestry Tennis Club held its Club Final’s Day on Sunday in a low key, COVID secure manner with the finals of the only two tournaments that the club felt able to safely run this summer.
The Ladies Singles Ladder tournament was a new tournament to the club and was entered by 8 lady members. It saw a flurry of late challenges resulting in semi-final play-offs between 14-year-old Ellie Edwards playing Linda Clark, and 15-year-old Millie Parsons-Hann playing Joanna Dalietos. The junior members prevailed to set up a Final’s day showdown for the trophy.
A terrific standard of tennis ensued with both girls hitting the ball sweetly and accurately. The first set was nip and tuck throughout but at 5 games all Millie got a vital break of serve and held her own to take it 7-5. Millie’s confidence then grew and Ellie couldn’t find an answer, with Millie taking the second set by 6-2 to clinch the match and championship.
The Mixed Singles Ladder tournament was entered by 14 members and saw a phenomenal total of 51 challenge matches made and played over the period June to September, showing the club’s appetite for single’s play as well as to doubles. The Ladder play period finished with the top four set to play out semi-finals as Brett Hollywell against Gary Edwards and Matt Grice against David Clough. Brett and Matt were the victors setting up their Final’s day contest.
Brett, having beaten Matt in the earlier stages of the tournament started confidently and with assurance, immediately breaking Matt’s service game and holding his own to quickly take a 2-0 lead. However, Matt persevered with his game plan and overturned a 3-1 deficit by winning the next 5 games to win the first set by 6-3. Matt then built on the momentum gained, playing some terrific strategic tennis in the second set, completing the task with a 6-0 scoreline to win the match and the championship.
