Finals Day 2021
The day started with a Social Tournament where ten members enjoyed a competitive series of mini matches, banking points for each game won, culminating in the lady and man with the highest points total pairing together to play against the lady and man who achieved the second highest points in a final show-down. So Richard Hann and Rose Butler which finished with the highest points played against Vincent Looijer-du Puis and Carol Slater. Vincent and Carol came out victorious to win the tournament.
The participators of the social tournament refreshed themselves with a shared lunch before settling down with other spectators to watch the opening Club Championship finals; the Mixed Singles Final and the Ladies Singles final.
Chairperson Gary Edwards and junior member Kobe Jones earned their places in the Mixed Singles final having won their semi-final matches, having finished in the top four in the Ladder tournament run over the Spring and Summer. Kobe started the better and quickly wrapped up the first set by 6-1 displaying his stylish and accurate power-shot play, however Gary ground in and the second set swung one way then the other until at 6 games all a tie-break was required to split them which Kobe won to win the match and the trophy at his first attempt.
Two junior members Millie Hann and Ellie Edwards competed in the Ladies Singles final having finished first and second on the Ladder. A terrific standard of tennis was played as the girls battled out a nip and tuck first set where at 6 games all, as with the Mixed tournament final, a tie-break was required to split the girls. Millie came out on top to bank the first set. With the added confidence from having won that first set Millie ran away with the second set, winning it by 6-1 to win the trophy.
The last of the finals was the Doubles Handicap Knock-out tournament which saw Richard Hann and Gary Edwards seek to overcome a handicap disadvantage against Alan Clarke and Kobe Jones. The match proved a step too far for Richard and Gary as Alan and Kobe ran out convincing winners by 6-1, 6-3 to wrap up the trophy.
The club now looks forward to the start of the Shropshire Autumn League Mixed Doubles tournament where it has entered 4 teams, and also to its next Social Tournament which is to be played on 24th October as a combined tournament with its friends, Oswestry Team Tennis, the Juniors based club.
