Fixture: Oswestry Mixed 2 v Woodfield 3
Result: Won 4-0
Oswestry Tennis Club’s 2nd team hosted Woodfield’s 3rd team in the Shropshire Group 3 Autumn League Mixed Doubles league match.
Gary Edwards playing with Elspeth Cumpston played the Woodfield 1st pairing first whilst Brett Hollywell and Clare Parsons-Hann played their 2nd pairing first.
Edwards and Cumpston had to work hard in a first set that was initially closely contested when at 3-4 down they took the initiative to take the next eight games out of nine and eventually came out winning 6-4, 6-3.
Hollywell and Parsons-Hann had an easier encounter winning their rubber by 6-1, 6-3.
In the reverse rubber Edwards and Cumpston easily won the first set against the Woodfield 2nd pairing by 6-2 before letting complacency get the better of them and losing the second set 3-6. They then pulled their games back together to convincingly win the third set championship tie-break decider by 10-4.
Hollywell and Parsons-Hann made a slow start against the Woodfield first pairing, quickly falling to a 1-5 game deficit but then made a remarkable come-back to take the set to a 6-6 game score and so force a tie-break, which they won. They then took full control of the rubber after having totally demoralised their opposition, taking the second set 6-1.
So Oswestry bagged all 4 points to keep their hopes of promotion fully alive.
