Fixture: Oswestry Mixed 2 v Boughey Gardens 3
Result: Won 3-1
Oswestry Mixed 2 hosted the third team from the usually strong club Boughey Gardens club. Uncertainty loomed all day as to if the match would be able to go ahead due to rain. The Oswestry four were keen to earn a good result after their previous loss to the undefeated WTTC 1.
Hann and Hollywell took on the BG first pair in what started to become a closely fought first set. Hollywell played some well thought out tactical tennis but Hann struggled to settle and find the consistency required to win the rubber. Unfortunately, the task was too much for the Oswestry pair and they lost the first rubber.
Meanwhile, on the other court, Hann and Campbell were straight into their winning ways. The ‘younger but now well established’ partnership soon had their opponents running in every direction on the court that was possible. Campbell launched some shoulder wrenching serves whilst Hann buried the ball away at the net. A very convincing win 6-1, 6-2.
At the halfway point it was all level. The regular support team all turned out (thank you all!) in what was to become challenging weather!
Hann and Hollywell took the mid-point turn around as an opportunity to reset. With a new focus, the pair took on BG second pair. Settling more quickly Hann put in some more confident groundstrokes and Hollywell took control of the net. The pair secured the first set 6-2. With rain falling and lots of ‘the weathers awful tonight’ from the opposition, Hann and Hollywell put in a fantastic team performance and smashed home a second set win 6-0 taking the overall rubber 2-0. Hann and Campbell who were locked in battle with the BG first pair and also dealing with ‘the weathers awful tonight’ had to contend with some very tricky playing conditions. Both pairings were keen to nail the first set but it was the home team who proved to be the stronger and more determined who pulled off some tremendous shots to clinch the first set 6-4. Rain continued to fall. In the second set the home side took an early 2-0 lead, clearly not distracted by the weather conditions. The weather proved to be too much for the opposition who then conceded the game giving the Oswestry team a 3-1 victory.
