Fixture: Oswestry Mixed 2 v Wem 1
Result: Won 3-1
Oswestry Mixed 2 opened up their 2019 season with an away match to Wem on the 11th September. A slight change in the line-up this year. This year’s competitors are the 2017, 2018 pairing of Clare Hann and Brett Hollywell (captain), and the unbeaten 2018 pair (without dropping a set!) of Emillie Hann and Matt Campbell.
On a perfect evening, with the team having to contend with a challenging court surface they set about their campaign.
Hann and Hollywell got off to a slow start struggling to find any consistency with shot-making. Wem’s pair took advantage of this and raced off to a 6-3 win in the first set. The second set was somewhat different. Hann and Hollywell rethinking their strategy raised their game and pushed the Wem pair to a tiebreak. After an epic battle with both players digging in deep, they succumbed to a 9-7 loss.
On the other court, Hann and Campbell clearly continuing with the form that they had left off on last season, dominated the first set with some thunderous baseline strokes and unretrievable volleys claiming the first set 6-1. In the second set, the Wem pair changed their approach and put up a strong performance but with great teamwork and communication Hann and Campbell sealed their victory with a 6-4 win. 1 point all at halfway!
The reverse rubbers saw some epic rallies, played with grit and determination by all players. Wem, who were keen to take the next 2 rubbers were pressing both the Oswestry partnerships very hard. Hann and Hollywell after a midway team talk and reset had to fight for every point playing some unconventional but gutsy tennis. The pair battled for over 2 hours to eventually clinch the win for Oswestry 7-5, 7-5 – much relief! Hann and Campbell on the other court demonstrated just why they hadn’t lost a set during their partnership and relaxed into their strong controlled play. The Oswestry pair were just too strong for Wem to cope with and secured their second with of the night 7-6, 6-1
Challenging, tiring but a successful night for the Oswestry four who came home with a 3-1 win.
